One of our corporate guests came down for breakfast in a big hurry and asked Roxanne what were the fastest eggs she could have. Without missing a beat one of the other guests said “raw”

Cheap Champagne…Expensive Champagne
December 7, 2010We recently had a wedding. When it was time for the toasts the caterers had an amazingly difficult time opening the bottles. They managed it with seconds to spare. Later that evening much to my surprise the bridal party all still in formal dress went outside in the street and started opening champagne bottles and spraying each other with it. The odd thing was they had no problem at all opening the bottles. The caterer and I were watching from the upper balcony. She sort of gasped and raced down to look at the bottles. It turns out they had given her 2 kinds of champagne the expensive stuff to toast with and the cheap stuff to spray each other with. The caterer served the cheap bubbly and the guests were now spraying each other with the expensive bubbly. No one seemed to notice or care. They just had an absolute blast.

Come to breakfast at the Modern
November 22, 2010We have decided to do this to enhance our guests experience. My moment of inspiration came when one guest was meeting some local Houstonites for dinner. She had a glass of wine with another guest at the table before her friends arrived and we discovered that they were in the same industry. My guest has only a small toehold in the U.S. and a very large one in Europe and the local Houston folks have a big presence in the U.S. and a very small toehold in the rest of the world. There was good potential for collaboration. Not sure where this will go for them but, there is certainly opportunity when my guests meet local people. The chance for better business opportunities and just to get a better idea of how great Houston is. Breakfast is by reservation only. $12 for hot breakfast i.e. the whole deal and $10 if you want continental which does not include eggs etc. from the chef.
Our continental breakfasts include the following: coffee, tea, orange juice, fruit smoothie, homemade granola, muffins or scones, fruit plate and yogurt. The chef made items that change from day-to-day include: eggs to order, pancakes or frittatta.
Guests sit at a communal table and the conversations or usually very interesting.

Mr Dickweed
September 16, 2010This guy who is actually a guest at another BB calls Apple for help. Not sure what transpired on the call but, Apple always sends a follow-up e-mail after a help call. The subject line reads “Dear Mr. Dick Weed” Hmm. It made me laugh but, he got upset and called a supervisor. they played back the tape and he clearly spelled out his name and it was not Dickweed but, I bet he was not the most polite on the phone either. According to him the Apple phone rep lost his job. I have mixed emotions about that.

Broken Window ends Happily Ever After
September 16, 2010One of my cool guests… Julie worked at a glass repair shop. A male customer with a really sexy voice called to order a window. They referred to him at the shop as 118 crate Myrtle st. Julie just about melted every time he called. The window installers told her she didn’t have a chance with 118 Crate Myrtl … nice house 3 kids etc. Seven years late she was helping her 2nd husband sort files & found an invoice that said window repair 118 Crate Myrtle. Isnt’ that wild

Cruise Control
April 20, 2010A guest spent time in Saudi Arabia. When cruise control first came out there were some problems…. Cruise control translated means “The car drives itself.” He and another couple were driving in separate cars to Iran. A large Ford Crown Victoria crosses the center line hitting the front car head on. Luckily no one was injured. The authorities later discovered that the driver of the Crown Vic turned the cruise control on and climbed in the back seat for a nap.

Clown Pants
April 18, 2010A German guest at the BB wore black & white checked pants. I do mean huge checks. He bought them on clearance at a mens boutique. Wonder why they were marked down?…. Anyway he wore them and his wife said, “You can’t wear THAT.” Then his 5-year-old came in and said, ” Daddy, I love your pants, I want clown pants too. “
He is in sales and says when he is at a convention with lots of people they can always find him.

Trivia Anyone?
April 14, 2010The Harp has an excellent trivia night on Tuesdays at 8 P.M. . I seem to be merging 2 of my lives together… My runner life and my BB life. I was supposed to meet Chris, our former chef and awesome trivia player and 2 of the runners from the Bayou City Running club who are also avid trivia players. So before Trivia I showed 5 houses yesterday and then rushed back to the BB to find Dave, John and Bill at the table. First thing I hear when I get through the door is “you are late we have to go to Trivia.” Wow…now they know my schedule. It was 7:45 and apparently Chris had come by to pick me up to go to trivia night. In so doing he informed all of the guys about it and so all of us went. Teams can be no more than 6 and with the 2 runners from Bayou City that Chris and I were supposed to meet we had 7 so we fielded 2 teams. They always have great questions, like, “What is the fastest running horned animal?” , “Who was the actor who played Shoeless Joe Jackson In the movie Field of Dreams?”, ”Name the female cousin in The Dukes of Hazard and the actual name of the actress”. This one got us because we all knew it was Daisy Duke but, then Bill said it was Barbara Bach as the actress. Hee Hee. Barbara Bach is famous but, not for the Dukes of Hazard. She was married to Ringo . Ok so the Rhino is the fastest horned animal and I can’t remember who played shoeless Joe but, it was very fun. Oh yes and it is Katherine Bach as Daisy Duke.
While we all went to Trivia, Guy, our resident architect and avid Rice baseball fan, drove to Huntsville… Yes Huntsville and watched the Owls win 8 to 7. Julie, Chuck and Joy who all sell different construction products ie porcelain tile, cool paper coatings and Italian millwork ate at Ruggles on Westheimer. My other architect named Guy hung out with friends. So the house was full and the guests as usual are super cool.
